Nicole spoke to PEOPLE who complied the following article on the Style Watch section on their website.
When we first saw Nicole Richie‘s purple hair, we assumed the star made the big dye decision all on her own. (She happens to be one of Hollywood’s biggest trendsetters.) But, she says, it was actually her 6-year-old daughter Harlow Madden who pushed her to go for the pastel hue.
“[Husband Joel Madden] has been coloring his hair for as long as she can remember so that is something that is normal to her,” Richie told PEOPLE. “She asked me, ‘Why don’t you ever dye your hair?’ — and so we did it.”
And Richie even let Harlow experiment with some washout hair color of her own. “She just dyed hers blue yesterday. It will only last a week, but even she’s having fun with it.”
Richie, 32, also opened up about her bold style choices, explaining that she dresses for the moment, even if she knows she’s going to look back at some of her outfits and cringe.
“There’s no way you’re not going to look at yourself 10 years ago at any point and say, ‘Everything I did was just great and there’s nothing embarrassing,’” she shared. “You’re going to get embarrassed, so it’s really about experimenting and having fun and knowing that embarrassment is coming no matter what.”
And while she always manages to have fun, the star is also very busy between her mommy duties, filming Candidly Nicole and running her own clothing line. In Las Vegas on Tuesday for the Licensing Expo, the House of Harlow 1960 founder and designer spoke of finding her balance between being a clothing designer and being a mother to two children.
“Family definitely plays a role in how much I take on,” she said. “This is exciting, but you have to have fun while you do it as well. You don’t want to spread yourself too thin. Why be in this business if you’re not going to really enjoy it? I take on what I can and that’s just what it is.”
