Nicole Lets Harlow Dye Her Hair Blue

Written by admin on June 23 2014

Nicole spoke to PEOPLE who complied the following article on the Style Watch section on their website.

When we first saw Nicole Richie‘s purple hair, we assumed the star made the big dye decision all on her own. (She happens to be one of Hollywood’s biggest trendsetters.) But, she says, it was actually her 6-year-old daughter Harlow Madden who pushed her to go for the pastel hue.

“[Husband Joel Madden] has been coloring his hair for as long as she can remember so that is something that is normal to her,” Richie told PEOPLE. “She asked me, ‘Why don’t you ever dye your hair?’ — and so we did it.”

And Richie even let Harlow experiment with some washout hair color of her own. “She just dyed hers blue yesterday. It will only last a week, but even she’s having fun with it.”

Richie, 32, also opened up about her bold style choices, explaining that she dresses for the moment, even if she knows she’s going to look back at some of her outfits and cringe.

“There’s no way you’re not going to look at yourself 10 years ago at any point and say, ‘Everything I did was just great and there’s nothing embarrassing,’” she shared. “You’re going to get embarrassed, so it’s really about experimenting and having fun and knowing that embarrassment is coming no matter what.”

And while she always manages to have fun, the star is also very busy between her mommy duties, filming Candidly Nicole and running her own clothing line. In Las Vegas on Tuesday for the Licensing Expo, the House of Harlow 1960 founder and designer spoke of finding her balance between being a clothing designer and being a mother to two children.

“Family definitely plays a role in how much I take on,” she said. “This is exciting, but you have to have fun while you do it as well. You don’t want to spread yourself too thin. Why be in this business if you’re not going to really enjoy it? I take on what I can and that’s just what it is.”

“One Last Thing” with PEOPLE

Written by admin on June 23 2014

Nicole recently spoke to PEOPLE online about “one last thing.”

Last person I kissed
[My husband] Joel and my kids Harlow, 6, and Sparrow, 4. It was in a big Madden family group hug this morning.

Last obsession
Turtles! We got two for Sparrow’s birthday. He loves Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and that turned into a love of real turtles. But now he has moved on, and I am stuck with them. I even joined a turtle forum and read about other people’s turtle drama. My turtles are surprisingly fast.

Last show I watched
I just started watching 24. I know I’m a little behind. I like to stay about eight years behind any TV show so I know what to expect. I am binge-watching it, and now every day I feel like people are out to get me.

Last time I watched the sunrise
I am up before the sun every morning. I like a good hour by myself while everyone is still sleeping. I go out in the garden, relax and have some hot water with lemon. Just take some quiet time before I start my day.

CTV News adds the following quotes:

“I just started growing our own garden. I’m home a lot and we’re growing our own fruits and vegetables. There’s so many things in food right now and it’s important for people to know and be educated on whatever they’re putting into their body.”

“I love wearing my little vintage peasant dresses, but I garden in the morning and I’m really cold in the morning. I end up with a North Face (jacket), my husband’s baseball cap, colourful sweatpants that I slept in the night before, and leopard slippers.”

Nicole Richie Covers Paper Magazine

Written by admin on April 28 2014

As if she weren’t busy enough, Nicole and the Richie-Madden family have been growing their own fruits and vegetables for the past six months. Every day Nicole tells me how “great and calming” gardening has been. Now they have, like, an entire Whole Foods in their backyard. I make her walk me through everything she’s growing (mostly for you guys because she’s tried before and I don’t care). “We have apple trees, blueberry trees, lemon trees, strawberries, butter lettuce, arugula, sugar snap peas, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, spinach, mint, thyme, oregano and sage.” Lionel Richie (Nicole’s dad, for the two people who might not know) guest-starred in an episode of #CandidlyNicole on AOL and expressed equal enthusiasm for gardening. But Nicole clarifies that her dad is “more of a landscaping type of guy, and I’m more of an edible garden person.”

House of Harlow 1960: Nicole Richie’s Sweet Melody

Nicole Richie was interviewed by Nordstrom. They discuss House of Harlow 1960 and more.

“I’m a firm believer in taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone,” says the seasoned cover model. “It’s important to have fun with fashion, and recognize that it is a way of communicating and self‑expression. Whoever you feel you are is who you absolutely should be.”

If you’re hoping for a sighting of Nicole’s iconic bohemian flair at this year’s music festivals, hang tight! The seasoned TV star is in the midst of production for an unscripted reality show premiering on July 17 on VH1 called #CandidlyNicole, based on her comical AOL web series.

“I don’t think I’m going to make Coachella this year because I am filming my new show,” says the former judge of NBC’s Fashion Star. “My dad’s playing Bonnaroo and I want to go. I’m hoping that I can at least go up for the day; it’ll be a last-minute thing, but that’s my wish for this summer.”

ELLE’s Joe Zee Interviews Nicole Richie

Written by admin on March 24 2014

For this month’s A to Zee, ELLE creative director Joe Zee sat down with the ever-chic Nicole Richie for her take on spring trends, the inspiration behind House of Harlow 1960, and finding her personal style. Pick up the April issue of ELLE for the full story, and read on for all the best outtakes from the hilarious conversation.

What’s your worst-ever fashion mistake?
Well, I wanted to wax my eyebrows when I was 13 or 12, and my mom wouldn’t let me, so I shaved them off in the middle without a mirror, and I actually only shaved the front part, so I only had the ends of my eyebrows.

I don’t even think I knew what waxing was at 12.
Well, you’re not a girl. You’re almost! But you’re not. And you’re also Asian, so you don’t have that problem.

I don’t need to wax anything, even!
You don’t need to wax anything!

Ever!
I was also obsessed with Punky Brewster, so I’d wear a white sock and a black sock.

And did it translate? Like, was it cool, or was it just—
Was it cool? Well, I mean, I was eight, so I probably I thought it was cool. I also wore a uniform so like, only the shoes were the things that were mismatched. I was just reduced to the ankles down. So I was like schoolgirl on top and then from the ankles down I was like Punky Brewster.

So it wasn’t Punky Brewster, it was just Brew.
It was more Ster.

What else?
I went through an early ’90s kind of a Nirvana-I’m-so-sad-I’m-weird phase, and I would put Kool-Aid in my hair. Remember we used to dye our hair with Kool-Aid? And I really wanted glasses in the third grade. Opticals. But clearly I didn’t need glasses, so I took sunglasses and I popped out the lenses and just wore the frame Urkel-style.

So how would you describe your style when you landed on ‘Simple Life’?
I think it was probably 2003, 2002? And I was going for like a Grace Kelly look on ‘Simple Life 1’.

Were you?
How’d you think I did, with the extensions, and the trucker hats? It didn’t read?

You know, that’s just me, it’s open to interpretation. I think that was a Grace I didn’t know. Do you still have any of those clothes from ‘Simple Life’ era?
I don’t have any of the trucker hats, but I do find myself wearing some of Joel’s hats, and now I find myself wearing sneakers all the time.

So how did your style evolve after ‘The Simple Life’?
It’s really hard to say, because I actually consider myself a jeans and t-shirt person who just accessorizes a lot.

Really?!
Yeah!

See, I wouldn’t consider you a jeans and t-shirt person.
Really?

I don’t know, because I look at you all the time and I‘m like, “She’s so high fashion, she’s really luxury”—I just think you’re so editorial in the way you approach fashion.
Well, I think at the end of the day I’m still wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I’m still very much me. I had been wearing extensions for about 10 years, and I just decided, You know what? I don’t want anything in my hair anymore. I mean, I don’t really wear makeup in real life, just when I have an event or some kind of photo shoot or something. And I mean, even in that, after I took out my extensions, first of all, my hair was so short—this was this summer—and I knew that I had to make it thicker and you know get it healthy, so I was piling leave-in conditioner in my hair. And I was thinking, What am I going to do? And then I was like, “Fuck it. I’m just going to rock a slick-back and put conditioner in my hair,” and that’s what I’ve been doing for the past six months.

Wait, so do you go to red carpet events with conditioner in your hair?
All the time. And after that, it was so freeing that like, I stopped really wearing a lot of makeup, you know, I think even—especially when you’re in this business, and for me I was so young [when I started]—you’re programmed to think, OK, well, now I have to get my makeup done, I have to get my hair done. It’s this big process, and it actually gives me a little bit of anxiety. And after I took out my extensions, I just kind of felt like, more free. I never felt more comfortable in my life.

Wow! I’m obsessed with that.
I mean, right now, I have no other choice. Right now, my hair is a lot thicker, so I’m able to wear it down some. But I really like my hair off my face, I don’t like a lot of makeup on my face, and I’m the same way with clothes, I don’t like a lot of fuss. I need to feel confident, and by the way, I’m 5’ 1”—things swallow me. They overwhelm me. I’m not a person who can wear a ton of makeup, or a ton of hair, or a big gown. It’s just not me. And I have never felt better, I’ve never felt more confident. And like, I’m the most natural that I’ve ever been.

Nicole Richie: “Please Stop Saying ‘Chic!'”

Written by admin on September 14 2013

Nicole was recently interviewed by Elle Magazine. You can read the interview below:

Your line has usually taken visual cues from the ’60s. Why were you feeling a ’70s vibe for fall?
Because my line is called House of Harlow 1960, people assume it’s literal. What I mean when I talk about “The ’60s” is a vibe that definitely extended into the ’70s as well. It’s about freedom and labels not really being part of your wardrobe. It’s about layering lots and lots of jewelry, and having everything transition from day to night. It’s really about that free-spirited energy and excitement that you can see in those periods, not a definite or defined year.

Was there a certain music or pop culture trigger for this particular collection?
Well, I’m lucky because I have a lot of vinyl and a lot of great music which always inspires me. But besides all the classic stuff, I’ve been listening to a lot of Avenged Sevenfold.

Do they have a classic rock sound?
Avenged Sevenfold is actually a metal band, believe it or not. I mean sometimes, yes, I love metal! Not just in jewelry! Joel [Madden, Richie’s husband] introduced me to them, and I play them all the time. But they don’t look like Metallica. They’re not a hair band. Oh, you know who else is really good? Passenger. They’re like folk rock. They’re so good.

Do you remember the first piece of jewelry you ever designed?
I do, actually. I grew up in Los Angeles, and I used to buy these pieces of velvet and these charms, like little silver elephant charms and little charms with an Indian vibe. I would make chokers out of them with superglue. It cost about $10 to make one necklace, and I would charge $10 for them, so my parents had to intervene and say, “You know, Nicole, you really need to work on your business plan before you keep doing this.”

How old were you?
I was 10. [Laughs] So I guess I had some time to figure all that out!

Your dog Iro co-stars in the upcoming House of Harlow 1960 campaign. How long have you had him?
About a year. At first, it was Joel’s thing. He did all the research. He was very specific about the kind of German Shepherd he wanted, and he was really involved and really excited about getting a dog, but now I’m his primary caretaker! He’s my dog for sure!

How did you know he’d sit still during a photo shoot?
Oh, because he’s a fame whore and he lives for the camera. [Laughs] What can I say, some men need attention, and need to be adored! And Iro is one of them!

You know what’s great about House of Harlow? Your rings come in really small sizes.
Thank you! I had to make them that way, because my fingers are so small. So we always make a wide range of sizes, and I’m always surprised that it’s not a standard thing. I know I’m not the only one with small fingers.

What’s the most complicated hairstyle you can do on yourself?
I am the best braider in the world. I can braid anyone’s hair, I can braid my own hair, and I can do all kinds of complicated and intricate braids. I’m a master of the braid.

What about makeup? You always have amazing black eyeliner that never seems to smudge?
That I can’t tell you about. I’m not that kind of “lady” who always leaves the house with makeup. In fact, the only time I wear makeup is when I’m working. So I have no idea how my eyeliner stays on. All I know is that I have really talented makeup artists.

Is there an overused word you’d like to retire?
Chic! Please stop saying chic!
